What are the different types of hair loss?

There are numerous forms of hair loss (alopecia), which can affect hair anywhere on the body. All forms of alopecia differ in causation (etiology) and severity, which can only be diagnosed by a medical provider.

Alopecia can be subdivided into two main categories: non-scarring and scarring. The most common type of non-scarring hair loss is known as androgenic alopecia, or simply male and female pattern hair loss. Androgenic alopecia is a common type of hair loss, affecting approximately 50% of men and 15% of women. The main culprits behind androgenic hair loss are thought to be factors such as genetics and hormones, including DHT.

Telogen effluvium is an additional form of non-scarring alopecia that arises from a shift in one's natural hair growth cycle towards a cycle with a shorter anagen (growth) phase and longer telogen (shedding) phase. Telogen effluvium may result from different factors such as an underlying illness, improper nutrition, or certain medications.

Alopecia areata can affect hair all types of hair, from the hair on your head to the hair on your body. When it affects a specific portion of the body it is referred to as alopecia areata, but when it begins to affect an entire site (bald patches) it is referred to as alopecia totalis. Furthermore, when the whole body is affected it is called alopecia universalis. As of now the exact biological mechanisms behind alopecia areata are not fully understood but research indicates it is the result of autoimmunity.

Traumatic alopecia, similar to traction alopecia, results from repetitive tension placed on the hair shaft and follicle. More common in children it can result from hair pulling or hairstyles that exert strain on the hair for prolonged periods.

All the above are forms are classified as non-scarring, and comprise the majority of hair loss cases. Scarring hair loss is collectively known as cicatricial alopecia and composed of less common forms of hair loss. Although all differing in etiology all forms of cicatricial alopecia result in a hair follicle that is irreversibly destroyed and replaced by scar tissue.

What are the differences between male and female hair loss?

Androgenic alopecia occurs more commonly in males than in females, affecting approximately 50% of men and 15% of women. It results from a combination of both genetics and hormones.

The classic male pattern hair loss starts above the temples and at the vertex leaving a characteristic M-shaped hairline. It rarely progresses to complete baldness and leaves hair at the sides and back of the head intact. Female pattern hair loss causes diffuse thinning of hair over time without a recession of the hairline.

The female pattern hair loss causes diffuse thinning of hair without a recession of the hairline.

Can the Hair Activation products help with all types of hair loss?

Scandinavian Biolabs’ activation products can assist with early-stage non-scarring hair loss. Unfortunately, our products are unable to assist individuals who have been diagnosed with irreversible scarring hair loss or cicatricial alopecia.

Preliminary research suggests that Scandinavian Biolabs products help to stimulate hair follicle functionality while priming both the scalp and hair towards a state of optimal growth.

Are there any associated side effects?

It is important to note that although naturally-derived, all our products are not allergen-free. Vanillyl butyl ether and eucalyptus oil have sensitizing properties and encourage you to check the ingredients before starting to be sure you are not allergic to any of the listed ingredients.

We are aware of a described 'tingling' or 'burning' sensation upon application of the Bio-Pilixin® Serum, which is considered a normal reaction when using the serum. The intensity varies depending on the individual, ranging from minimal notability to irritability. Most cases are mild, but in some cases, redness and tenderness may occur. If experiencing any additional side effects discontinue use and consult a medical professional. Please report any additional side effects to our customer support team.

Before beginning a new regime, we always advise customers to consult a medical professional, along with checking our ingredients page to assure you have no known allergies to any of the ingredients.

Can the serum be used alongside other hair products?

Yes, it is possible to use the serum alongside other hair care products. However, it is important to state that Scandinavian Biolabs is not aware of the function, drug interactions, ingredients, nor effects of any external products.

While Scandinavian Biolabs products work best together, it cannot be claimed with definitiveness whether Scandinavian Biolabs and external products hamper/supplement each other's effects.

If ever in doubt, please consult an accredited healthcare professional.

Does the progress disappear after discontinuing the products?

Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for alopecia. Similar to nearly all hair growth products on the market, once the products are discontinued, the hair integrity will regress to its former stasis before the products were applied and the progress will fade away.

In order to maintain the effects, the products need to be used continuously as prescribed for as long as the they bring value and provide benefits to the user.

What is the difference between the men's and women's products?

Since there are no DHT-blockers in the Bio-Pilixin® formula, there is no distinct difference between the men's and women's product lines. Each gender can use all products interchangeably with similar effects to their hair.

Does the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum contain DHT-blockers?

The Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum does not contain any known DHT-blockers. Early-stage research suggests that curcumin, a component of Curcuma longa, may have a role in inhibiting the action of DHT, but it is not fully understood. Unlike prescription products, our products are not intended or designed to target hormonal imbalances. Our serum focuses entirely on maintaining the integrity of the hair follicle.

Will a dry scalp result in hair thinning?

When dry hair becomes brittle it is more prone to breakage and splitting, resulting in split or dead ends. In turn, this could result in thinner appearing hair.

Dandruff can be caused by multiple factors, including a dry scalp.  Although dandruff itself is not a cause of hair loss, pruritus, or the sensation of itch, may lead to continuous scratching and picking of the scalp, in turn, damaging hair follicles.

Which Scandinavian Biolabs products can help with dry scalp and hair?

Check out our Hair Strength & Recovery Bundle in the products section.

The Hair Strength Shampoo helps to soothe dry scalp with naturally derived moisturizing agents, while the Hair Recovery Conditioner aims to protect the hair shaft from external factors, protecting the integrity of damaged hair.

What are the different stages of the hair growth cycle?

In short, the hair growth cycle consists of four key stages of hair growth. Although each phase consists of multiple transition phases the four main stages are often referred to as the growth phase (anagen), regression phase (catagen) and quiescence/resting phase (telogen), and shedding phase (exogen). In healthy individuals, approximately 90 percent of all the hairs on your head are in the growth phase (anagen).

On the science page you can find an even more comprehensive description of the hair growth cycle, so we would recommend you to read that as well.

Can the Scalp Activation Derma Roller be used to complement the application of the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum?

A derma roller can be used to assist in complementing the serum. It has been suggested that derma rolling can lead to enhanced skin penetration, allowing a serum or active ingredient to penetrate deeper into the skin or scalp over topical application.

Mistakes can happen; the most important part of product delivery is that the package is sent correctly and as fast as possible so the products can be enjoyed rather than worried over. Contact Customer Care here, who will happily attempt to fix any mistakes that might occur in the shipping process.
Are there any duty fees for non-EU countries?

Orders that are shipped to non-EU countries may be subjected to additional import surcharges, such as duty fees and import taxes, which will be collected upon delivery. Import charges are normally based on the item's price, weight, dimensions, and country of origin, as well as any local taxes, duties, and fees.

However, for the following countries, we either cover or have agreements in place to waive fees: Canada, South Africa, Vietnam, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Iceland.

Courier providers may issue administrative fees for processing packages and assisting with custom clearances. While the shipping rate is covered by Scandinavian Biolabs ApS, any additional charges issued to the shipment when in transit will not be covered by the company.

Scandinavian Biolabs is made and produced in Denmark. The products have therefore been registered under specific EU Trade Agreements that exempt orders from duty fees for certain countries.

United Kingdom residents can purchase above the £135 threshold without being subjected to duty fees for all Danish produced items.

While duty fees are waived, customer's may be subjected to consumption fees (domestic VAT) and administrative fees.

How does the Hair Strength Shampoo function?

Many off-the-shelf hair care products contain ingredients that may harm the hair's integrity, such as sulfates, silicones, and parabens. The first step in the 3-step Bio-Pilixin® routine, the Strength Shampoo, supplements the Recovery Conditioner and Bio-Pilixin® Serum by gently cleansing the scalp and hair while supplying vital nutrients to repair damaged hair. The Strength Shampoo was formulated to strengthen and prime the hair towards becoming thicker by reducing excessive sebum and delivering high-performing active nutrients to nurture and promote fuller hair.

How does the Hair Recovery Conditioner function?

The Recovery Conditioner repairs and protects damaged hair without the use of sulfates, silicones, and parabens. The second step in the 3-step Bio-Pilixin® routine, the Recovery Conditioner, repairs damaged hair while creating a protective layer around the hair shaft. Many external factors can lead to weakened brittle hair, such as heat and oxidizing agents from hair dye. The active ingredients in the Recovery Conditioner help protect the hair from future damage by forming a protective barrier around the hair shaft, maintaining the hair you already have.

How does the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum function?

Unlike many pharmaceuticals that work by blocking the hormone DHT, our formula focuses entirely on the integrity of the follicle and the optimization of the hair’s natural growth cycle.

Capilia Longa™, the key active ingredient, has been shown in individual studies to help extend the growth phase and shorten the shedding phase, leading to up to 89% reduction in hair loss and up to 52% improvement in hair density.

The Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum also contains Vanillyl Butyl Ether to help increase localized blood flow to the scalp, providing a sufficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the base of the hair follicle to promote fuller hair.

Clinical testing on Bio-Pilixin® has confirmed that our formula helps optimize the hair growth cycle, which resulted in a measurable reduction in hair loss in 93% participants and a clinically tested increase in density in 73%.

How does the Eyelash Growth Serum function?

Many eyelash growth serums contain synthetic ingredients that can lead to eye irritation. The Eyelash Growth Serum is formulated with naturally derived ingredients such as calming chamomile water, amino acids, and plant stem cells, to help nurture the eyelashes without irritating chemicals. With its active ingredients working in tandem, the serum addresses damages sustained from beauty while effectively reducing eyelash loss by strengthening the integrity of each eyelash inside and out, resulting in fuller, healthier-looking eyelashes.

Can I use the serum while pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding?

Our products don’t contain any known endocrine disruptors and should therefore be safe to use while pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. However, please note that we have not run any tests on such individuals, so if you’re concerned, please talk to your healthcare provider who will be able to give you personalized advice.

Can I spread the 2 pipettes out over a day?

No, we recommend adding the 2 full pipettes at the same time to ensure the scalp is covered and the serum can work properly.

Does the serum work regardless of age?

In our study where 93% experienced a reduction in hair loss, the age of the participants ranged from 19 to 61, and included both men and women.

Can the serum remove the natural colour of my hair?

No.

Hairline Booster - is it vegan?

Yes, by Danish standards, the Hairline Booster is 100% vegan.

Hairline Booster - Can it be used with other products?

Within Scandinavian Biolabs’ product line, it is okay to combine the Hairline Booster with most of the product lines, as it would bring the integrity of the formulation by using the product lines together.

Since the Hairline booster is targeted for those who are experiencing the early onset of hair loss around temples and frontal hairline, the products have not been tested with other hair loss solutions such as Minoxidil, Finasteride, and hair transplants. If you are already using or considering such treatments, or if any concerns, it is always recommended to consult your doctor to seek professional advice.

Hairline Booster - What hair types is it suitable for?

Hairline Booster - How is it different to the Activation Serum?

The Bio-Pilixin Activation Serum is designed for overall scalp application to enhance hair integrity. In contrast, the Hairline Booster is specifically formulated for the front, corners, and temples.

Their applicators reflect these distinct target areas: the Bio-Pilixin Activation Serum features a pipette for free distribution across the scalp, while the Hairline Booster utilizes a 6-ball roller. This roller ensures direct, precise, and effective application, alongside a gentle massage to aid in reducing hair loss and stimulating follicle activity.

The Hairline Booster specifically addresses early signs of a receding hairline, aiming to preserve youthful vitality. For those focusing on hair care beyond the frontal hairline or temples, the Bio-Pilixin Activation Serum is the recommended choice.

Hairline Booster - When to expect results?

Scandinavian Biolabs’ Hairline Booster features the Bio-Pilixin Activation Serum so similar results can be expected. One of the key active ingredients, Capilia Longa from the root of the Turmeric plant, has the ability to contract the catagen and telogen phases—which are stagnant stages—and extend the anagen phase—the active stage in hair growth. The first thing to notice would be a reduction in hair shedding after 45 days of use. With daily application for 150 consecutive days, clinical testing has shown an increase in density.

Usage & Application

Can hairstyling oil, gel, and/or wax be used after applying the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum?

As long as the serum has naturally dried, it is appropriate to apply any hairstyling oil, gel, and/or wax to help improve style, form, or texture for the hair. It takes on average between 20-40 seconds for the serum to naturally dry.

How much shampoo/conditioner/serum needs to be applied?

Hair Strength Shampoo

The amount of Hair Strength Shampoo prescribed is 8ml per cleanse. The bottle contains 250ml in total and holds roughly a month’s supply. Adjust the amount used to in accordance to hair length, personal preference and needs.

Hair Recovery Conditioner

The amount of Hair Recovery Conditioner prescribed is 8ml per cleanse. The bottle contains 250ml in total and holds roughly a month’s supply. Adjust the amount used for hair length and personal preference if necessary.

Bio-Pilixin® Serum

The amount of Bio-Pilixin® Serum prescribed is a minimum of the equivalent to 2 full pipettes of solution, needed for application on a daily basis. The bottle contains 100 ml and holds roughly a month’s supply.

How long can the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum be left on the scalp after the initial application?

Up to 48 hours, but you should apply 2 full pipettes every day if you want the best chance of seeing results like in our study.

After application the serum should be lightly massaged to cover the scalp and then left for minimum 6 hours.

Do the Hair Strength Shampoo and Hair Recovery Conditioner need to be applied daily?

To get the most of what Scandinavian Biolabs has to offer for hair strength, repair, and activation, it is recommended to use the Hair Strength Shampoo and Hair Recovery Conditioner daily to complement the effects of the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum. The shampoo and conditioner contain small concentrations of key active ingredients, which should be as exposed to the hair and hair cells as possible to encourage maximum engagement for optimal results.

It is, however, not compulsory to use daily if it does not fit personal preferences and lifestyles. The Hair Activation Routine is still effective even if application is not upheld daily. The only products which Scandinavian Biolabs recommends applying daily is the Bio-Pilixin® Serum and Eyelash Growth Serum.

Should the serum be applied on wet hair or dry hair?

To utilize the serum, it is recommended to apply on either towel-dry, blow-dry, or dry hair. If applied on soaked or wet hair, the solution may become diluted and runny, resulting in less concentration on the desired treated area.

Is it normal to experience a 'tingling' or 'burning' sensation when using the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum?

Experiencing a 'tingling' or 'burning' sensation is a normal reaction when applying the Bio-Pilixin® Activation Serum. The intensity varies depending on the individual, ranging from minimal notability to irritability. In some cases, redness and soreness may occur. For many, it has been noted that the heating sensation lessens after a few weeks.

Notably, these sensations can be heightened after showering as the skin tends to be more tender than normal conditions. The sensation is attributed to the heating agent HotFlux®, or vanillyl butyl ether, which provides warmth to the scalp to stimulate blood flow. If the sensation is found to be too intense or overstimulating, please discontinue usage.

Can I dry my hair after applying the serum?

You should dry your hair prior to applying the serum and leave it in your hair for at least 6 hours. You can still style your hair.

When should I apply the serum? Only after showering?

The serum should be applied daily with the recommended dose (2 full pipettes). In our study, participants applied the serum before going to bed to ensure it was allowed to work for a minimum of 6 hours. It is not necessary to wash your hair or shower before using the serum.

No.

How should the Eyelash Growth Serum be used?

Ensure that makeup and other beauty products are removed from eyelids and eyelashes. Apply the Eyelash Growth Serum near the roots of the eyelashes. Once dry, other cosmetics can be applied. Let the serum settle for at least 6 hours. Use the Eyelash Growth Serum 1-2 times a day (morning and evening).
